Revisiting the impact of cryptocurrency in our society
Currently, cryptocurrency does not present and never has presented any preponderant role in
our society, despite all the speculation it had around that has been consistently growing over
the years. The evolution of this coin is due to the economic reality lived in the last years on the
world. Cryptocurrency appeared in 2008, weeks after the economic crash emerge, with an email sent by Satoshi Nakamoto presenting a dazzling computer program, an algorithm called
Bitcoin (Varoufakis, 2019). Unlike any other coin existent in our society, cryptocoins exhibit a
growth throughout the last decade, it has not lost value with the current crises, mostly because
they are not controlled by any central entity like governments or banks.
With the goal to make virtual coins keep gaining more importance in our world, it is mandatory
for companies to start adopting this innovation and to implement them in their business strategy.
Following this, it is also needed for the final consumer to be open minded and have the
necessary awareness to complete the implementation of this process.
The main goal of this dissertation is to reveal the impact cryptocoins have now and may have
in the future of our quotidian, taking into consideration that many potentials for the
improvement of our life quality were identified in this innovation
The architecture of predator-prey and the relationship between complexity and stability
Theoretical studies predict that the stability of an ecosystem is negatively correlated with its complexity, measured by the number of interacting species. On the other hand, empirical evidence indicates that food webs are highly interconnected. In this manuscript we present results on the stability two-level predator-prey food webs. We analyzed exhaustively all possible topologies of connections among species. Our findings show that those food webs fall into two classes with clearly distinct stability properties. In one of them stability is negatively correlated with complexity, and in the other group stability is positively correlated. For a positive relationship our results reveals highly structured food webs. The positive or negative relationship is related only to the topological structure of the food web. It is independent of the number of connections, strengths of predator-prey interactions or number of species. We review empirical evidence that corroborates our results
Programmed cell death processes in Saccharomyces cerevisiae are altered by GUP1 deletion
During the past years, yeast has been successfully established as a model to study mechanisms of programmed cell death regulation. Saccharomyces cerevisiae commits to cell death showing typical hallmarks of metazoan apoptosis, in response to different stimuli. Gup1p, an O-acyltransferase, is required for several cellular processes that are related to apoptosis development, such as rafts integrity and stability, lipid metabolism including GPI anchor correct remodeling, proper mitochondrial and vacuole function, bud site selection and actin dynamics. We used two known apoptosis inducing conditions, chronological aging and acetic acid, to assess several apoptotic markers in gup1∆ mutant strain.
We found that this mutant presents a significantly reduced chronological life span, comparing to Wt and it is also highly sensitive to acetic acid treatment. Although both chronological aging and acetic acid lead to identical effects, the differences between the strains in the levels/types of apoptotic markers are notorious. In addition, ROS levels of gup1∆ mutant strain were extremely high. According to our results, cells lacking GUP1 seem to be incapable of undergoing apoptosis. Instead this mutant appears to be experiencing a necrotic cell death process.
Gup1p has been described to have an important function on lipid rafts assembly/integrity as well as on cell lipid profile. On the other hand, in the literature, rafts have been increasingly implicated on apoptotic signaling. The present results reinforce such idea.
perícia do material.
A proposta desenvolvida obteve resultado
Forensic methods of estimating information from individuals are constantly used by experts
in real scenarios. The forensic process of age and sex estimation requires an expert and approaches that normally need the physical presence of the individual for the execution of the
expert procedures. Child pornography is an illicit activity that relies on the ease of the internet to acess and disseminate this type of content, making it difficult to identify and exploit
the material. Research on pattern recognition techniques and machine learning in computer
vision allow the development of methodologies based on photo-anthropometry for identification of anthropometric information using facial images. The advancement of technology
and the increasing process of the data volume, the experts need alternatives to be inferring
the age and of individuals by analyzing digital files only. This work has the goal to develop
methodologies for automatic identification of cephalometric points in facial images, generate
photo-anthropometric measurements and propose a computational solution to assist forensic
professionals to estimate age and sex in a database with thousands of images. The proposed
work to identify cephalometric landmarks obtained similar accuracy with the manual points
made by experts with result of normalized average error (in pixels) of 0:014 versus 0:009
of average dispersion by experts. The results present significance in the estimation process
of anthropometric data using facial images with convolutional neural networks and facial
photo-anthropometric measurements. The developed proposal obtained 99:2% positive results for sex estimation. For the estimation of over 18 years old the result of F1 was 0:926
while for over 14 years old it was 0:957. Finally, the age estimate, the proposal obtained a
MAE result of 1:42 using a sample of individuals over ages from 2 to 22 years old
